A Model of Cerebral Vasospasms and Metabolomic Mapping

Abstract

Cerebral vasospasm (CV) is a one of the main factors leading to high morbidity and mortality in patients with severe subarachnoid hemorrhage. There are no relevant biomarkers of early diagnosis of CV.

Metabolic signs of brain ischemia based on vasospasm may be detected by direct implantation of a microdialysis catheter. The goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of cerebral vasospasm induced by an infusion of endothelin1 on selected amino acids in the brain of adult male rat.

Within 2 hours after induction of vasospasm we detected changes in the concentrations of amino acids, some markers of brain ischemia and inflammation. This represents a model of cerebral vasospasm leading to changes relevant for clinical practice.
