Potentials of Gender Studies in the Interpretation of Greek Vases

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2016

Abstract

The main aims of this paper are to examine how gender studies can influence the 'reading' of Greek vases, how the methods and results of these approaches can be used in the study of Greek vase painting, and how our modern view of society affects our understanding of ancient Greek society depicted on vases. I will focus on the iconography of women in Attic Red - figure pottery.

In the social context of the democratic ideal, art becomes a form of self-representation, serving a public function. Vases may represent stereotypes of women rather than images of individuals and their real lives.
