Monotheism, violence, and religious intolerance

Publication at Faculty of Humanities |
2016

Abstract

The chapter focuses on the alleged relation between religious intolerance and monotheism. This assumpation goes back to the critic of religion during the Enlightenment but it has been permananetly occuring up to these days.

The chapter is concetrated on the topic in confrontation with theses of current egyptologist and cultural theorist Jan Assmann. The text introduces and critically asses Assmann's thought about the topic from early formulations in 90s up to the last book Exodus from 2015.

The facit is that contemporary religous violence and intolerance cannot be explained by the existence of the old canonical texts, but rather the phenomena are to be interpreted and understood from contemporary tensions and uprootedness which is brought about by modernity.
