Historical foundations of phonetics and phonology in pre-service language teacher education

Abstract

The chapter summarizes the beginnings of systematic teaching of phonetics at universities preparing teachers. It focuses on phonetic topics within philology lectures in the period before the institutionalization of the discipline as well as in the period after the specialized phonetic department was established.

The authors sum up the influence of the Prague Linguistic Circle, mainly the Theses, and reflect its impact on didactics of pronunciation teaching. The chapter informs about the personalities crucial for the development of the discipline as well as about the historical development of the distribution of phonetic topics in philological programmes at the Faculty of Arts and at the Faculty of Education, Charles University in Prague.
