Ideological Purpose of Greek Elements in Ptolemaic Royal Sculpture

Presented paper focuses on the emergence of the specific type of Ptolemaic royal portraiture which incorporates Greek iconographic elements. This specific category of royal portraits appears during the reign of Ptolemy V, in the period marked by significant weakening of the royal house.

The paper analyzes the formal specifications and emergence of these portraits within a chronological and stylistic framework and emphasizes their ideological purpose. It also deals with individual iconographic element of Greek origin and relates their inclusion to the ideological aims of the dynasty.

Its main aim is however to point out possible reasons for the introduction of the new royal image.
