Safety at the Olympic games in Munich (1972 ) and Montreal (1976) as viewed by czech participants

Abstract

Ensure the safety of the Olympic Games (OG) is financial, personnel and technologically extremely demanding. Fear of terrorist atack is the cause.

Expenses for the OG in Sochi reached 35 billion crowns. 100.000 police and army were involved in ensuring safety. But it was not always usual.

Until after the Olympics in Munich in 1972 attention to safety was raised as a result of the attack on Israeli athletes. Stricter security measures were seen immediately in Montreal.

The aim of article is brief summary of selected archive and literary sources about the security for the OG in Munich and in Montreal and add experiences and views of Czech athletes with participation of both. Personal testimonies were obtained through structured interviews with open questions.

When analyzing these interviews, it was found that athletes accepted higher safety measures as an annoying but necessary. They consistenly reported, that they were not intimidated by terrorism.

According to them, the fear is main target of terorrism. By utilizing an interview with open questions we have gained unique insights, experiences and views directly from the scene of events OG.
