The 13th-century Venetian coin found on the Cathedral Hill in Olomouc

Publication |
2015

Abstract

The article informs about a find of the Venetian grosso on the Cathedral Hill in Olomouc in context with the other finds of medieval Italian coins in this city. While coin hoards are mostly interpreted as the evidence of long-distance trade, the authors associate this find with the papal collection.

They argue that in 1261 the pope authorized Bruno of Schauenburg, the bishop of Olomouc, to deposit money collected from Central Europe at his court and to arrange its transfer to Venice.
