This contribution is concerned with the horizontal structure of the Classical Latin texts and its representation in the editions. Though there are several indications of the text structure in the editions of the Latin texts (Arabic numerals, Roman numerals, indentation), these indications are rather intuitive and frequently questionable.

However, it will be shown that the delimitation of a paragraph can have a bearing on the interpretation of the text. Therefore a greater attention should be paid to the paragraphs.

This article will ask, whether the ancient authors thought in paragraphs and divided their texts into them, and if so, whether there is some linguistic marking of the paragraphs. In order to answer these questions, it is necessary to look for some recurrent text patterns (i.e. stretches of text with a different content, but with the same structure).

Some of these patterns and the possibilities of their variation will be given at the end of the contribution.
