The Desertion Abroad of Czechoslovakian Military Men and Its Investigation in the Years 1948-1989

Abstract

After the year 1948 the political regime of communistic party in Czechoslovakia looked for a support of power. One of those was naturally the Czechoslovak Army.

The part of this process was the wave of persecutions aimed at officer's body. It could realize the dismissal of politically unreliable military personnel.

Many affected soldiers decided for illegal leaving Czechoslovakia as the only way to survive. Their investigation was realised by special intelligence unites - defensive intelligence, 5th departament of General Staff, main intelligence board, military intelligence administration and military counter-intelligence service.

The supervision in criminal trial was advocated by a military prosecution. The desertion abroad was formally a military crime.

But, the organs of investigation perceived it as political crime.
