This book chapter explains the main systemic features of the Nazi war economy in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. It examines the extent to which that economy paved the way for the planned economy in Czechoslovakia of the communist postwar period.

It shows that the transition from the wartime to the postwar economic order was not continuous or uninterrupted. The Nazi occupation created no path dependency but rather afforded favourable conditions for economic and social transformation.

The decision of the Czech political elite to launch the economic transformation of the country was a sovereign decision, was motivated by a particular ideology and was not the result of systemic predetermination.
