Abstrakt
The article wants to present two models of the perfect city as they were discussed by the famous mediaeval Islamic philosophers Alfārābī and Ibn Bājja in their political treaties: On the Perfect City and The Governance of the Solitary. Both return to the wisdom of Plato and Aristotle with asserting again the ancient principle that the human being is by nature political and that the best way of life for the individual is the virtuous life pursuing happiness.
In this context both philosophers tried to design the concept of what a city ought to be in order to be perfect and bring about the happiness of its citizens. Although Ibn Bājja agreed with the Alfārābī's highest goal intended for human beings is the perfect virtuous city, he also described the life of solitary trying to achieve happiness alone and that seems as unusual individualism and thus as breaking with the political orientation of his philosophy following the ancient principle mentioned above.
