Abstract

Sleep medicine is an evolving subspecialty overlapping with several medical specialties. Sleep medicine are very common not only in adults, but also in children.

It is particularly the incidence of insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea that increases due to the effects of lifestyle. In left untreated, sleep disorders constitute a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular and metabiolic diseases.

Sleep disorders are responsible for daytime microsleep, increase the risk for accidents and injuries, and result in deterioration of psychological fitness, mood, and quality of life. Besides, they are frequent comorbidity of psychiatrric, medical, and neurological conditions and diseases.

Using case reports, tha autors provide especially physicians in the above specialties practical guidance to the diagnosis and management of individual sleep disorders in adult and paediatric patients nased on their long-standing experience in sleep laboratories and specialized clinics. The publication starts with an introductory theoretical part defining basic terms and methods of examination.
