Historical evolution of the classification of ankle fractures

Abstract

The current classifications of ankle fractures are based on the concepts published originally in French by Chaput, Tanton, Destot and Danis. Destot divided ankle fractures into malleolar and tibial pilon ones - a concept which is valid until today.

Classification of ankle fractures according to the level of the fracture line on the fibula was not first introduced by Weber. The first to use it was Tanton in 1916, followed by Asshurst and Bromer.

Danis associated the fracture level with a specific ligamentous lesion. B.G.

Weber reduced Danis' four types of fibula fractures to three ones and changed the description of ligamentous lesions in Danis' Type 2.
