Abstract

The ceiling paintings in the church of Our Lady Queen of Angels in the Hradčany district of Prague are an outstanding example of the work of the Capuchin friar Paolo Piazza. They make an important contribution to our knowledge of the artistic work done by this painter in Bohemia and Central Europe.

The ceiling paintings were uncovered at the end of the 1970s, and until recently the identity of the artist was unknown. The paintings were made using the al secco technique and have the Marian themes of the Annunciation, The Assumption, and the Coronation of Our Lady.

On the basis of a formal analysis and stylistic comparison the painting can definitely be attributed to the Capuchin friar and painter Paolo Piazza. Piazza stayed in the monastery in Hradčany around the year 1600, and it is therefore also possible to deduce the date at which this work of his was created.
