Abstract

The topic of relationship between reality and the media is considered mostly in connection with the journalistic objectivity and various biases in media messages, both conscious and unconscious. However, under this layer there are other ones which do not concern only the partial information, but also the general projection of world in human mind, i.e. in a subjective reality.

The object of this paper is to show a significant amount of influence of the media on shaping the subjective reality. In the first part a phenomenological perspective will be introduced, in which the (mass) media are seen as one of several sources of mediated information.

In the second part the media will be considered as one of the institutions which are involved in the social construction of reality; the final part connects both the aforementioned views together when speaking of a subjectivity of an individual, and of both conscious and unconscious effects of the media on forming the practical basis from which many other, more particular issues of the media-reality relationship are derived, e.g. the above mentioned journalistic objectivity.
