"Who am I as the photographer?" : The image of gender order in expert comments of the female nudes photographs taken by Petra Skoupilova

Publication at Faculty of Humanities |
2016

Abstract

The article analyzes a set of various texts about the photographic work of female nudes by a woman-photographer Petra Skoupilová. The sample of analyzed works (texts from the period 2004-2014) covers the whole spectrum of theoretical articles, from specialized books to short internet announcements.

The author of the paper has divided this group of texts into five analytic levels: 1) expert; 2) public space/media; 3) journalist interviews interconnecting expert and media levels; 4) statements given by the photographer herself; 5) biographical interview. Various ways of reproduction of the stereotypical/androcentric gender order are presented as the output of the analysis.

Beside this, the outputs identify also texts with a subversion potential, of which the most important is a study by the professional art woman-theoretician Anna Fárová. The interconnection of various levels of analysis points out to the important phenomenon - the reproduction of gender inequalities in the ways the original works (often taken out of their context) are copied and distributed in virtual space.
