Parties, Elections and Democracy : from Duverger to Sartori and Beyond

Publication at Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts |
2016

Abstract

The task of this publication is to contribute to the analysis of developments in political science from the mid-20th century until now. For this purpose two eminent European political scientists with world reputation were selected: Maurice Duverger and Giovanni Sartori, who - to a large extent - dealt with largely the same themes, among others with types of parties and party systems and their relation to electoral systems and types of democracy.

The starting point for this publication was primarily a founding book by Maurice Duverger "Les partis politiques" published in 1951 and the Sartori's classic book "Parties and Party Systems" published exactly a quarter century after the Duverger's path-breaking monograph. And - last but not least - the book also reflects important scholarship on the types of democracy associated with preferencesof particular electoral and party systems.
