Abstract

Metabolic acidosis is inevitably related with kidney dysfunction. Its major source is protein metabolism.

Metabolic acidosis has a lot of serious side effects - it impairs renal osteodystrophy, increases protein catabolism, decreases albumin production, increases insulin resistency and cummulation of beta-2-microglobulin. The presented study has shown that metabolic acidosis increases loss of residual renal function of native kidneys in peritoneal dialysis patients.
