Abstrakt
The idea of Jiří Levý to conceive translation as a decision-making process is of a great interest to both specialists in translation and linguists. An interest in analyses of translations, in comparing expressions of the same content in various languages led to the origin of the so-called parallel corpus, a type of linguistic corpus containing texts in numerous language versions.
Based on linguistic material obtained from the InterCorp parallel corpus (i. e. corpus created by the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, www.korpus.cz/intercorp), the article analyzes possibilities offered by parallel corpora to researchers who try to describe translation processes. The author of the study focuses on various factors which influence the translation as a decision-making process (e.g. the context, the role of a translator, etc.).
Besides, he pays attention to the problem of equivalence/correspondence of the translated and original texts. Although the new methodology relying on parallel corpora has some weaknesses, it presents an important contribution to the theory of translation.
