Unregulated pain and birth-related stress can have adverse effects not just on the course of the childbirth, but also on both the mother and the child. A starting assumption for administering analgesics in obstetrics has to be the goals of not influencing the physiology of the mother or the child/foetus in any negative way, not influencing the uterine processes in any negative way, making the entire process of childbirth easier, while using sufficiently effective analgesic agents, thus fulfilling the patient's needs.
