Analgesic therapy in advanced and terminal palliative care for cancer patients

Abstract

Pain in patients with locally progressive or metastatic malignant neoplasm with exhausted the possibilities of anticancer therapy is serious and deteriorating quality of life symptom that requires interest of madical doctors and nursing staff. The author's communication deals with the treatment of cancer pain in patients in a palliative care program.

Cancer pain very negatively affects the overall quality of life of a patient particularly if inadequately treated. It must always be adequately treated and none of the patients with malignant neoplasm not desire death just because they suffer unbearable and inadequately treated pain.

Absolutely obvious interest madical doctors and nursing staff to alleviate cancer pain should be considered in patients at a stage when all options are exhausted anticancer treatments and patient thus passes into the palliative care program. These patients usually due to pain, hopelessness, awareness of impending death and feelings of social isolation they experience high levels of distress.

This can alleviate suffering, not only pharmacologically, as well as individual psychological support and empathy. It will be appreciated that in every patient with malignant neoplasm is necessary to choose an individual approach (personalized analgesic therapy), both with respect to its overall condition and also his wishes, and possibly also the wishes of the family of the patient.
