Abstract
George Berkeley is known above all for his idealism and his denial of the very possibility of material substance. No less significant, however, is his understanding of the human mind as an essentially active being and his theory of self-awareness.
James Hill presents to readers an original view on Berkeley's philosophy of spirit. He demonstrates why the traditional empiricist interpretation of Berkeley's philosophy is unsustainable and in what sense his conception of mind and of intellectual concepts is pioneering and how it remains relevant today.
Hill's book interprets the whole range of Berkeley's work, including his theory of vision and Siris, his little known final writing.
