The publication summarizes texts from different authors-researchers, who deal not only with power and morality in healthcare, but also use an interpretative approach, and, above all, conduct their studies "on the ground" of the Czech medicine and healthcare system. The book presentsthe condition of and relations in Czech healthcare.
The volume isin essencetheoretically and empirically grounded, research-oriented monograph. It consists of original studies that combine the subject ofthe power of medicine, a social constructivist approach and presentations of findings in the form of case studies from the Czech healthcare system and Czech medicine.
Studies presented in particular chapters relate to a wide range of topics - from birth of children to death and dying, from ordinary chronical diseases to transsexuality, understood not only as a change in biological sex and the body, but also as a transformation of identity, both personal and social. The trend of medicalisation of everyday life and identities is exposed using the example of treating erection problems with a new kind of drug.
The hospital culture and its gender dimension is described in the chapter devoted to the problem of communication between doctors and nurses in emergency and life-threatening situations, showing how they are overcome inspite of tensions and conflicts (rules and procedures).
