Edema of lower extremities - their causes and differential diagnosis

Abstract

Swelling of the legs may be a symptom of several pathological disorders and diseases. The swelling is caused by accumulation of fluid in tissues or it is result of excessive increase in volume of interstitial fluid in the body.

The article discusses the basic pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the development of edema of lower extremities. The treatment of edema consists in determining the cause and in choosing of the causal treatment.
