The review study focuses on metaphors of storytelling and narrative in contemporary psychotherapy. Two main manifestations of this metaphor in both psychotherapy theory and practice are introduced: a) narrative-informed psychotherapy embedded in psychological knowledge with emphasise on an individual Self, b) narrative-informed psychotherapy and narrative therapy embedded in postmodern philosophy and theory of social construction with emphasis on relationship between an individual and culture.
Basic assumptions of so called psychological and post-psychological perspectives with regard to narrative in psychotherapy are described in detail. The post-psychological perspective including its clinical, and highly popular example - narrative therapy - is commented from a critical standpoint.
In conclusion, the integrative potential of narrative concept in psychotherapy is critically commented on.
