At the Cost of the World? : The World-Conception in Hegel's Encyclopedia

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2016

Abstract

Hegel conceives of the spirit as an activity of interiorization and exteriorization: In this process, spirit builds up a world, in which he subsequently recognizes itself. In this conception, man as a being endowed with spirit shall carry out quite the opposite movement - he shall acknowledge the existing world as finished, while at the same time completing this world with his work.

In the lecture, I shall focus on the question how this connection of the objective spirit giving rise to a world on the one hand, and the subjective spirit acknowledging this world shall be understood. I will primarily focus on Hegel's anthropology as put forward in his Encyclopedia.
