Přemyslids between east and west : Dynastic relation of Bohemian princes and the first kings and their political connections ti the end of the twelfth century.

Abstract

The aim of the article is to explore the marriage policy f House of Přemyslid in the manifestations of their international political orientation. The area where the future spouse camefrom was determined by the geographical location of the Czech lands.

Very limited sources indicate that the first known Přemyslids intermarried with the daughters of princes neighbouring Slavic lands. During the eleventh century spouse of Bohemian princes became mostly women from counties and margraviate of Holy Roman Empire for example Schweinfurt, Bogen, Berg, Wettins.

Exceptionally future wives came from Poland and Hungary. In the twelfth century kinship relationships of Přemyslids considerably widened.

Přemyslids sought political support mainly in Hungary, but also in higher-situated dynasties of Empire who was related to the royal and imperial families. Through the Hungarian Royal dynasty they alluded with families of southern Europe probably also of Russian court.

A fundament change occurred in the thirteenth century, when Přemyslids as ruler recognized by Holy Roman Empire and the Pope became the elite and entered big politics. Coniugal policy meant that the reigning and future kings married with the most important families in Central Europe, including the rulers of the Holy Roman Empire.
