Prevention and Treatment of Internet Addiction

Abstract

In this chapter we are going to focus on the possibilities of prevention and treatment of Internet addiction / excessive use of the Internet. While in the recent years there are published many texts regarding the treatment of Internet addiction, prevention area has only recently begun to attract the attention of the professional public.

Within the chapter Prevention are defined core target groups of preventive interventions and specific skills that should develop preventive interventions. Further are discussed two fundamental aspects of prevention programs: providing information versus skills development and mono- versus multimodality.

Beside the therapy alone are discussed other options for healing (self-healing and self-help), characteristics of people seeking treatment and also are introduced the basic approaches in the treatment of Internet addiction and excessive use and their effectiveness. At the end are described three basic types of clients, which can be encountered in clinical practice.
