Abstract

The authors present Karel Havlíček's correspondence as a rich source of knowledge on the social and communicative practice of the 19th century Czech society. They show the variability of this correspondence and the variability of research approaches to its analysis. Individual chapters deal mostly with one Havlíčks's epistolary partner or one group of letters.

The analysis focuses on e.g. the generational and thought contexts of Havlíček's public activities, on the then literary life, on selected Czech expressions that were evolving rapidly in the middle of the 19th century, on multilingualism, on the various roles that letters played in the communication, etc.
