Czech Deaf Signers' Understanding of Emotions

Abstract

Emotions, constituting an independent developmental research area of its own, are an integral part of social cognition. Understanding emotions represents a core communication competence appearing relatively early in ontogeny.

The socialisation of emotions has been repeatedly proven to be an important prerequisite for a successful participation in a daily social and cultural life. Although the developmental progression of sign-language users follows a specific pattern, there is a complete lack of research in this area in the Czech linguistic context.

The present paper investigates the developmental parallels in understanding and interpreting emotions between the typically developing Czech language users and the Deaf sign-language users.
