Motivation of patients with multiple sclerosis to motion activities

Abstract

Background: Physiotherapy and physical activity, as such, is nowadays one of the basic therapy in the care of patients with multiple sclerosis. Many studies have shown that better results were achieved in group forms of exercise.

For regular participation in group exercise, however, is the need to motivate patients. File: 92 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) (15 men and 77 women), aged between 22-70 years (median 41) with neurologic EDSS 1.5 to 6.5 (median 3).

Methods: A questionnaire survey among patients visiting group exercises. Results: The completed questionnaire handed 49 patients attending regular group exercises.

Among the factors influencing participation in group exercises include professional management, good time and local availability of equipment, an interesting exercise. You also need to consider the most common barriers to participation in exercises and try to eliminate as much as possible.

The most frequent obstacles MS patients include: fatigue and deterioration in health status, as well as lack of time and laziness. Conclusions: For the successful organization of group activities of MS patients seem to be a major key prerequisite mentoring physiotherapist or a professional instructor with knowledge of neurological issues, which is then able to draw upon the available options and gym equipment and assemble exercises so that satisfying the needs of MS patients
