Clinical neuropsychology in practice

Abstract

The publication summarizes the current status of clinical neuropsychology in different application areas in Czech republic. Introductory chapters are general in nature and relate to basic cognitive functions (motor skills, perception, memory, language, executive functions, thinking), emotion and personality.

They are focused mainly on their impairments and recommended diagnostic tools. General part complements a philosophical introduction, basic neuroanatomy CNS, overview of technologies imaging of brain (CT, MRI, SPECT, PET, fMRI) and a brief summary of the methodology in psychological practice of clinical neuropsychology.

A special sections of the manual are divided into an area neuropsychological problems in neurology (stroke, epilepsy, seizures and psychogenic movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, cerebellar lesions, brain tumors, Huntington's disease, motor neurone disease and brain injury). A separate part consists of neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease), cognitive impairment by them and special allowance for the possibility of using animal models in the study of these diseases.

More extensive neuropsychological essay talks about issues in psychiatry, there are eg. diagnosis of schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder and borderline personality. The area of cognitive rehabilitation is represented early and follow-up care for patients with traumatic brain injury and remediation in schizophrenia.

Neuropsychoanalysis, cognitive therapy of pain and emotional lability are part of the chapter of a neuropsychotherapy. Mentioned are also child, forensic and military neuropsychology.

Separate contributions concern eg. the eyes movements at different brain disorders, virtual reality and its use in therapy, adults persons with ADHD, occupational therapy, neuropsychopharmacology, neurofeedback, neuropsychology of lie, the dynamics of memory traces in a sleep. Last chapter is a brief history of our clinical neuropsychology.
