This article explores the contributions of the work of Prof. Zdeněk Helus to pedagogy, especially primary pedagogy and pedeutology, and in the internal transformation of the Czech educational system in the last twenty-fi ve years.
It centres on the key principles of humanistically orientated psychology and pedagogy originally formulated by Prof. Helus, specifi cally the turnaround to the child and what is known as the pedocentrism of the new generation, the personality-developing concept of school education with theemphasis on the development of the potentials of the child, the importance of auto regulation and autonomous learning, education and the pedagogy of turnaround, the quality of the teacher's personality, pedagogic virtues (besides professional knowledge and skills), the importance of integrity and personal transcendence.
