Abstract
Antibiotics are used very often in surgical fields, either as local prophylaxis at the site of the surgical procedure, or therapeutically, for handling infections and infectious complications. A correct choice of an antibiotic involves more than just picking the "antibiotic for the bacteria", according to the microbiological findings, or simply to make sure.
There are currently many anti-infectious preparations available, but not all are suitable and indicated for use in surgical fields, either due to their pharmacokinetics or due to high bacterial resistance and thus a risk of treatment failure. The publication provides the reader with basic information about the various groups of antibiotics and examples of antibiotics from each of the groups and the most common mistakes in their indications.
Two chapters are devoted to the issues of laboratory diagnostics, both microbiological, i.e. determining the infectious agent and inflammation diagnosis and the possibility of distinguishing an inflammatory response to infectious and non-infectious stimuli. The primary focus is aimed at practical use of specific antibiotics for the most common infections encountered in surgical contexts, such as in situ infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections or intra-abdominal infections.
Prophylaxis against infections on the site of the surgical procedure have their own chapter, focusing on its correct principles and current expert recommendations for various surgical procedures.
