Abstract

Folic acid, which is also one of the B vitamins (B9) soluble in water. It has an important role in the metabolism of amino acids, nucleic acids and phospholipids and the production of blood.

It contributes to the normal development of the neural tube during the embryonic period. Its deficiency is associated with an increased incidence of neural tube defects (anencephaly, encephalocele and spina bifida).

Folic acid has been also demonstrated to have an efect on the reduction of cleft lip and palate and congenital heart disease and can significantly reduce the number of spontaneous abortions
