Abstract
Due to population aging and higher prevalence of neurodegeneration-related cognitive impairment, standard neuropsychological assessment procedures are gaining importance. Over the last ten years, a view upon the function and design of neuropsychological assessment in the process of diagnosis has changed, and research recommendations have been implemented in clinical practice.
The main focus is aimed at identification of cognitive decline that may predict development of neurodegenerative diseases, among which the most common is Alzheimer's disease. Its diagnostic criteria has been revised, and neuropsychological assessment is now playing a key role in the diagnostic process.
The study offers an overview of standard neuropsychological procedures in the assessment of cognitive functions defined for clinical practice and in diagnostic criteria of neurodegenerative diseases in pre-clinic stage, in mild cognitive impairment and dementia. The article provides guidelines and recommendations based on research findings and clinical knowledge.
