Abstract
The UN system of mechanisms protecting against torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment was extended with new element - the regular visits, a mechanism inspired by the European Convention against Torture. The Optional protocol to the UN Convention against Torture created the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture, an international organ designed to carry out regular visits to detention centers in order to prevent conditions leading to human rights violations.
The OPCAT also introduced the so called national preventive mechanisms, domestic control organs entrusted with the same goals as the Subcommittee against Torture.
