Abstract

This study examines handwritten sermons on Saint Wenceslaus created by Czech Utraquists of the Hussite period until the end of the reign of Jiří of Poděbrady. Jakoubek of Stříbro created a "canonical" image of Saint Wenceslaus, which served as a model for almost all younger Utraquist sermons.

Jan Příbram continued on Jakoubek, but his thoughtful interpretation of the pericope was focused more conservative direction. Similar approach as Jan Příbram had Václav of Dráchov who in one of his sermons used a text written by Jan Hus.

The Hussite archbishop Jan Rokycana developed Jakoubek's legacy, but rather in the general moralistic and thematic sense. An influential sermon of Jakub of Jemnice was partly inspired by Jakoubek and as shown by it survived also in more literary developed and vernacular versions.

Unlike his contemporaries and leaders of the Utraquist church Jan Rokycana and Václav of Dráchov, the priest Martin Lupáč emphasized on the non-obviousness of the Christian faith. Later Utraquist preaching imitated either the moderate Hussite archbishop, or the exclusive Martin Lupáč.
