Abstract

In this anthology of ten studies Paul Ricoeur analyses the issue of human identity, or subjectivity, in the modern philosophy set up by René Descartes. Through a confrontation of continental philosophy with Anglo-Saxon analytical tradition he elaborates, in contrast with substantial identity-idem, the concept of ipseity, based on earlier Ricoeur's studies of their narrative fundament, now however oriented towards alterity, leading then to central questions of the relation to another, i.e. to ethics.
