Socrates' Wisdom

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2016

Abstract

In his chapter, the author deals with Socrates' concept of wisdom, determining its systematic place in the tension between its different aspects: 1) the self-confident wisdom of the sophists and natural scientists; 2) Socrates' negative wisdom of the elenchus; 3) his positive notion of care of the soul, oriented on virtue. The author believes that the concept of wisdom which results from this tension should be understood as philosophia, rather than as sophia.
