A girl at age 9 was hospitalized for pulmonary problems with underlying diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF) at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Faculty Hospital Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic. Immediately after hospitalization she developed typical varicella skin lesions.

The girl was vaccinated by a single dose of Varilrix (GSK) at the age of two. Typing of varicella zoster virus (VZV) isolates showed a variant of VZV Clade 5.

This is the first report of an atypical wild-type VZV strain manifesting as varicella in Czech Republic and, at the same time, a result of breakthrough VZV infection.
