Habent sua fata libelli : The Troper from Lübeck and Possible Musical Interests of Simon Batz von Homburg

Abstract

Due to confiscations in 1945, the medieval manuscripts preserved in Lübeck were long assumed to be lost. Most of the codices have by now been returned, including a troparium from the fifteenth century, well-known for its north German variant of "Christ ist erstanden".

The Latin compositions in this source are, on the other hand, almost unknown. This study aims to explore the manuscript's tradition and the purpose it served in the Lübeckian churches.

Paying special attention to the unknown song Pneuma erumnosi telluris rei with the acrostic "PETRVS", a surprising connection emerges between this find and the famous Lübeckian city clerk, Syndic Simon Batz von Homburg.
