The Ciphers of Transcendence: Vergílio Ferreira e Maurice Merleau-Ponty

Abstract

With the progressive secularization of society and culture, the accounts of transcendence seemed, on the threshold of modernity, bound to disappear from both literature and philosophy. Maurice Merleau-Ponty e Vergílio Ferreira are two declaredly non-religious 20th century writers who employed different means to grasp the transcendent dimension of human experience.

In search to express what escapes the possibilities of purely philosophical speech, Merleau-Ponty explores means of literature whereas Vergílio Ferreira expands the scope of fiction by embodiment an enactment of abstract philosophic constructions.
