Translating in Central Europe. The conceptualization of the translation of the authors of Prague German literature

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2016

Abstract

The article asks about the translation activity of the (mostly Jewish) authors of Prague's German literature. While she has often been conceptualized as a "bridge building", Scott Spector saw it as a purely egoistic foundation of a "middle nation", inhabited only by themselves, while Hillel J.

Kieval once again understood it as a "cultural mediation" and Steffen Höhne has spoken even of a "Neo-bohemism". The article concludes with the diagnosis of the inadequacy of all this conceptualizations and advocates for a more complex understanding of translation in the interculturality of Central Europe in the early 20th century.
