Museums as regional players in tourism - the pitfalls of museum statistics

Publication |
2016

Abstract

The article deals with an analysis of the pitfalls of Museum Statistics. Authors analyze the factors that affect the attendance of museums and manner of reporting these visitors.

This is done in the context of the role of museums as a regional player in tourism. To fulfill these objectives, we utilize descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, and synthesis.

Despite the fact that the chosen museums are among the most visited tourist destinations according to official statistics, it should be kept in mind that these results are influenced by many factors. One of the factors influencing attendance numbers may be the tallying of repeat visitors.

A correlation analysis, which we use as a test of first instance, revealed a statistically significant dependence on the number of visitors to exhibitions and expositions, which may indicate a potential risk of the manipulation of attendance data.
