Abstract

Age related macular denegeration (AMD) is leading cause of vision loss in developed countries among people age 50 and older. AMD is characterised by drusen formation, macular pigmentary changes, geographic atrophy of RPE, and neovascularisation of the choriocapillaris with exudation.

Unfortunately, at this time there is no single proven treatment for the dry form of macular degeneration. However, antioxidants (vitamins and zinc) may reduce progression of disease.

The most effective treatments for wet AMD are anti VEGF drugs.
