Abstract

Subsidence is any downward movement of the land surface caused by geological changes of the subsurface. The velocity of the land surface subsidence and the extent, depth, and shape of the subsidence depression formed at the surface vary according to the characteristics of the geological setting of the location and the geological processes causing the subsidence.

The formation of subsidence depressions may be accompanied by horizontal movements.
