"Where is my place?" - Richard Weiner and the Question on Jewish Identity: the modern Artist as "Stranger"

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2016

Abstract

Weiner's question asking "Where is my place?" in general implies the Jewish artist's discovery of his location and his relationship to the totality of national culture. The question on Weiner's Jewish identity opens up a broad spectrum of questions with respect to strategies on how "alienation" takes shape in the modern artist.

The study concerns itself with issues such as alienation and the search for identity in Weiner's work as well as with his relationship with language, which he encumbers with a practice that Deleuze and Guattari in reference to Kafka describe as "minor" or "intense" to where the writing process turns into the experience of being a stranger in one's own language.
