Sorting Out Words: Literature and Conceptual Tendencies 1949-2015

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2015

Abstract

The publication focuses on conceptual methods of work with text - and strives to present their typical features and elucidate their meaning. Conceptual strategies are found not only in contemporary literary production, but also in the works of visual artists or within established literary genres (concrete poetry, digital literature, experimental literature).

The studies interpret writers mainly from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Russia, but references are made also to German, Austrian and American authors. The book does not aim to give an exhaustive account of all writers of conceptual vein, but offers possible points of departure and interpretive frames relating to this highly topical issue.

Primarily it tackles the question of mechanical, constraint-based and institutionally critical methods of writing that may potentially inform a change in the conventional model of literary communication.
