Humour and play in the Art Gallery H

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2016

Abstract

The book presents activities of an unofficial private art gallery, which operated in the 80's in Kostelec nad Černými lesy. Clandestine culture arosed in the totalitarian regime brings new view into important existential issues such as freedom, locating of our doing, relation to the establishment, ethics.

While working on the book, we combined the oral history method, working with visual and textual archive and (visual) semiotic analysis. Main concept that governed the whole exposition, was the relationship between humour, play and art creation.

The collected and re-organised utterances (memories of the witnesses, photographic and textual gallery archive, artworks) provide important insights about development in the nature of Czech art and its practice in the last four decades. The outcomes are intended both for non-professionals, art theorists, art historians, curator theorists and teachers.
